M Endo RCS (Edinburgh)
FAMS (Endodontics)
Dr Josephine Tay Chiew Xsia graduated from the University of Malaya in 2006, served in the Ministry of Health Malaysia, and worked in private practice before starting further studies in 2013. Her work is niche and unique because she has been employing Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) as root canal fillings since 2018, a material known to have exceptional biocompatibility, antibacterial ability, and seal.
She is a trained Medical Expert Witness under a program collaborated between the Academy of Medicine Singapore, the Singapore Medical Association, the Singapore Academy of Law, and the Law Society of Singapore; to contribute her dental expertise in assisting the Court of Singapore in cases of medical negligence and litigation.

Why MTA?
The goal of root canal treatment is to prevent and control apical periodontitis with adequate chemo-mechanical debridement, followed by sealing the root canals three-dimensionally, providing a platform conducive to healing.
Conventionally, gutta-percha with sealers has been widely used as root canal fillings to seal the root canal system since 1847, with an average of 80% success rates. However, this material has limited ability to seal, is prone to leakage, and has minimal antibacterial ability, increasing the risk of failure over time.
Dentistry has seen many breakthroughs in the last 30 years, both in materials and technologies, further improving success rates of endodontic treatment.
Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) was introduced in 1993 and was game-changing in saving compromised teeth. It is gaining popularity in root canal treatment due to reported high success rates of more than 90% and minimal post-operative pain, thanks to its antibacterial ability, anti-inflammatory properties, excellent biocompatibility with our body, superior seal, and bioactivity.
Dr Josephine Tay has employed MTA in all her root canal treatments since 2018, with countless patients benefitting from successful control of root canal infection and retention of teeth.
